THE FIRST 3 DAYS

Your Tattoo’s Little Protective Bubble.

If your artist applied Saniderm or a similar medical-grade adhesive bandage, it’s designed to protect your fresh tattoo while your skin begins healing.

Here’s what you need to know:

● Leave your Saniderm on for up to 3 days, unless your artist gives you different instructions.

● You can shower with it, but avoid soaking in baths, hot tubs, or swimming pools.

● It’s completely normal to see a buildup of plasma, ink, and fluid beneath the bandage. It might look a little gross, but it’s part of the process!

● Avoid picking, scratching, or lifting the edges of the bandage.

● If the bandage begins leaking, the seal breaks, or your skin becomes irritated, remove it rather than leaving your tattoo exposed beneath a compromised bandage.

Important: If you experience significant redness, itching, blistering, or burning around the adhesive, remove the bandage and contact your artist. Seek medical advice if symptoms are severe or worsening.

REMOVING YOUR SANIDERM

Easy Does It, Babe.

After approximately three days, it’s time to let that beautiful new tattoo breathe.

1. Wash your hands thoroughly.

2. Remove the bandage slowly under warm running water, preferably in the shower.

3. Gently stretch the adhesive parallel to your skin rather than pulling straight upward.

4. Wash your tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser.

5. Pat dry with a clean disposable paper towel. Never scrub!

6. Allow your tattoo to air-dry briefly before applying a very thin layer of fragrance-free moisturizer.

Never rip Saniderm off dry. Your healing skin will thank you.

THE NEXT 2 WEEKS

Clean. Moisturize. Leave It Alone.

Once your bandage is removed, your tattoo needs a little daily attention while the skin continues to heal.

CLEANSE

Gently wash your tattoo 1–2 times daily with clean hands, lukewarm water, and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser. Avoid washcloths, loofahs, exfoliating brushes, and harsh soaps.

MOISTURIZE

Apply a thin layer of lightweight, fragrance-free moisturizer after cleansing and whenever your skin feels dry. A little goes a long way! Your tattoo should feel comfortable, not greasy or smothered.

LET IT HEAL

Light peeling, flaking, itching, and a slightly dull or cloudy appearance are all common during the healing process.

Resist the urge to pick, scratch, or peel away any loose skin. Doing so can interfere with healing and potentially affect the appearance of your tattoo.

KEEP IT COMFORTABLE

Wear loose, breathable clothing whenever possible. Avoid excessive friction, unnecessary touching, and anything that repeatedly rubs against your healing tattoo.

THE BIG NO-NO LIST

Things Your Fresh Tattoo Would Like You to Avoid.

For at least the first two weeks, and longer if your tattoo hasn’t fully healed:

● No swimming or soaking. Avoid pools, lakes, oceans, baths, and hot tubs until the skin has completely healed.

● No direct sun exposure. Fresh tattoos are especially vulnerable to UV damage. Keep them covered with loose clothing while healing.

● No exfoliating products. Skip scrubs, retinol, AHAs, BHAs, glycolic acid, and other active skincare ingredients directly over your tattoo.

● No picking or scratching. Let peeling skin and scabs come away naturally.

● No heavy friction. Avoid tight clothing and activities that repeatedly rub or irritate the tattoo.

● No fragranced lotions or harsh cleansers. Keep your skincare simple and gentle.

You don’t need to put your entire life on hold. Just be mindful that your tattoo is healing skin and deserves a little extra care.

KEEPING YOUR TATTOOS BEAUTIFUL FOR YEARS

Because Great Ink Should Age Gracefully.

Once your tattoo has fully healed, a few simple habits can make a big difference in how it looks over time.

SPF IS YOUR BEST FRIEND.

Sun exposure is one of the biggest contributors to tattoo fading and loss of contrast. Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher to healed tattoos whenever they’re exposed to sunlight.

KEEP YOUR SKIN HYDRATED.

Healthy, moisturized skin helps your tattoos look their best. Make fragrance-free body lotion part of your regular routine.

BE MINDFUL OF ACTIVE SKINCARE.

Avoid repeatedly applying strong exfoliating acids or aggressive resurfacing treatments directly over tattooed areas without professional guidance.

REMEMBER THAT TATTOOS EVOLVE.

All tattoos naturally soften and change over time. Fine-line tattoos, delicate shading, and intricate details may evolve differently depending on placement, skin characteristics, sun exposure, and lifestyle.

Taking care of your skin is one of the best ways to protect your artwork.

TATTOO AFTERCARE FAQs

How long does a tattoo take to heal?

Most tattoos appear healed on the surface within approximately 2–4 weeks, although deeper layers of skin can take longer to recover. Healing varies depending on tattoo size, placement, skin characteristics, and individual health.

Is it normal for my tattoo to peel or itch?

Yes! Mild itching, peeling, and flaking are common during healing. Avoid scratching or picking, and keep the area lightly moisturized.

What if my Saniderm comes off early?

Don’t panic! If your bandage comes off prematurely or the seal breaks, gently wash your tattoo and transition to traditional aftercare unless your artist provides different instructions. Don’t attempt to reseal a used bandage.

Can I work out after getting tattooed?

Light activity may be fine if it doesn’t cause friction, stretching, excessive sweating, or irritation around the tattoo. Avoid activities that expose your fresh tattoo to shared gym surfaces or unnecessary bacteria, and wait until it’s adequately healed before resuming activities that repeatedly irritate the area.

When can I put sunscreen on my tattoo?

Wait until the tattoo is completely healed before applying sunscreen directly to it. Until then, protect it from sunlight with loose, breathable clothing.

What if my tattoo looks cloudy or faded while healing?

A temporary dull, cloudy, or slightly milky appearance can happen as new skin forms over the tattoo. Give your skin time to fully recover before evaluating the final appearance.

How do I know if my tattoo is infected?

Some redness, tenderness, and mild swelling can be normal immediately after tattooing. However, redness that spreads or worsens, increasing pain, warmth, significant swelling, pus, foul-smelling drainage, fever, or red streaks may indicate infection.

Contact a healthcare professional promptly if you notice these symptoms. Fever, rapidly spreading redness, or red streaking warrant urgent medical attention. Do not wait for your artist to diagnose a possible infection.
